Kids Portrait Photography on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC

In the run up to celebrate my son’s 3rd birthday, we took a quick trip down to Capitol Hill for a very mini photo shoot. Some of the photos of my daughter only were taken nearby at a Virginia park before her recent birthday.

If your kids are anything like mine (and most siblings) then you know they don’t always get along, but when sweet moments happen I’m so grateful to be there to capture it. Here are some of the sweetest moments from our recent shoot and some from my daughter’s “birthday” shoot as well. Enjoy!

Outdoor Wedding Photography in Accokeek, Maryland

Last month, I had the honor and privilege of photographing the wedding of Janire and Richard, who earlier this year got engaged. Their wedding was exactly what you’d expect (and hope) for summer nuptials: a lush, natural backdrop; great friends and family to celebrate; delicious food; a fun wedding party; a beautiful bride; and a stylish groom.  The two looked so happy as they tied the knot. And although there was the typical summer heat, the fun and laughter kept things light and airy. Here are some of my favorite shots from the day…

Kids Portrait Photography Made Simple: Capture Their Creativity

Here are some tips for taking great kids photography that really captures their personality at their age. When you look back on these photos years from now, you’ll remember their unique qualities and talents and they’ll appreciate the fact that mom and dad thought so creatively about how to capture them in their younger years.

1. Use props. Consider your child’s interests and talents. Do you they love art, playing sports or constructing legos? Bring them to your photo shoot to get them relaxed in front of the camera and let me, the photographer, capture them in their element!

2. Tell jokes. Do they always crack up a certain joke that you like to tell? Or are they especially ticklish? Don’t be afraid to get a little goofy with your child to help loosen them up for the photo shoot.

3. Prepare the beforehand. Most kids don’t like surprises. Have a gentle, yet fun talk about the upcoming photo shoot. Practice poses they’d like to try, and let them know how long they will be taking pictures. Providing as much detail about the session, including location, who the photographer is, and what will happen afterward (photos will be delivered and you can create an album together!), will give your child the needed information to visualize what the day of the photo session will be like!

4. Eat a mean beforehand. Make sure your child is well-nourished just before coming to the photo session. And don’t forget to wipe faces! Crumbs do show up in photos! 🙂

Little Beauty Celebrates 5th Birthday! Kids Portrait Photography Washington, DC based Photographer

I’ve known this little one since she was still in her mommy’s tummy! And here she is today — 5 years old and growing up to be such a lovely little lady! I had the pleasure of photographing her and we had such a fun time posing and laughing and getting creative with props. She loves painting and all things creative so mom brought an easel and faux painting to represent her love of the arts. Mom also did such a great job finding wardrobes that fit her little girl’s personality.  Look closely and you’ll see images of kittens in her shoes! How adorable is that!? Enjoy the images.  [Read more…]

Kalokoh Family Photo Shoot Along the Potomac River/National Mall | Emily Ann Brown Photography | Family Portraits

The Kalokoh clan braved a bitter cold Sunday afternoon before the holidays as we took pictures along the Potomac River on the National Mall. They are some troopers. And yet, they managed to churn out some beautiful family portraits that I am certain they will treasure for many years to come.

Their two little ones warmed up to the camera after only a few minutes. Taking pictures outdoors, despite the chill that day, always seems to get kids to open up a little more. That’s when I get to capture the kinds of photos that are spontaneous, fun, and one-of-a-kind. These two sure didn’t disappoint!

Can’t wait to photograph this beautiful family again — hopefully in warmer weather! 🙂 Thanks for entrusting me with your holiday pictures, Kalokoh Family!

Gaba Family Holiday Photo Shoot | Family Portrait Photographer Serving Washington, DC MD and VA

These two have a great love story: they were friends for years before they both realized they had lots in common (e.g., a love for the Lord and helping others, a love of sports, and an overall zest for life, laughter and good times).

As the saying goes, first comes love then come marriage, then here comes the two with a baby carriage! A couple of years after tying the knot, they had their first child. I’m still waiting for them to announce that another baby Gaba is on the way, but for now I’m sure handsome little Carter is keeping them nice and busy — and sleep-deprived!

Sherry reached out in need of New Year’s portraits of the family, and I was happy to accommodate her request. We ended up having the photo shoot at the National Gallery of Art on the National Mall, which served as a wonderful backdrop for a fun family shoot.

These guys did such a wonderful job; didn’t need much in the way of direction at all, making my job of snap, snap, snap a breeze and a joy. Can’t wait to do it again soon! Wishing you guys much love, peace and happiness in the new year!

Tucker Family Holiday Portraits | Washington DC, MD, VA Family Portrait Photographer

I’ve know the Tuckers since BEFORE we all got married. In fact, we used to go on group dates to Dave & Buster’s together back in the day. (I’ll spare you the old pictures for now!) It’s so hard to believe that that was 10 years ago, and now we all are married, own homes and have kids. How time flies!

I had the pleasure of photographing the Tuckers for their holiday family portraits this year, and we had such a fun time. What I love about this family portrait session is that we did the shoot at the very cool, very modern Hirsshorn Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

I also loved their outfits and that it wasn’t your traditional holiday color combination, which means these could easily be printed or put onto a canvas and hung in the family home all year round. Great job, Devan!!

The Tuckers are the type of family you want to live next door to and raise your kids with. So humble, so sweet, and dare I say, so PHOTOGENIC! From their pictures, you can tell they have a lot of love for one another and they make sure to have fun — with an active toddler, it’s hard not to!

Thanks again for giving me the privilege to take your family photos this holiday season.

Family Pictures in Your Home Gets Kids More Relaxed — Family Portrait Photographer Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland

I recently had the pleasure of photographing the Stitt family in their lovely home in Virginia this month. It’s always great reconnecting with friends/clients, and this reunion was even more special because they welcomed a new baby girl to the family a few months ago.

I kid you not, she was such a baby doll! Made me (almost) want to have another child. Ha ha. 🙂 Here are some of MY favorite pictures from the session. Their oldest daughter is such a cutie, too! And it was so great photographing her in her element because I think we got some really memorable shots! Don’t you think so??

Like a lot of moms, we want to make sure our kids are comfortable enough when it comes to taking great pictures. What better way to make them at ease in front of the camera? Photograph at home! I’m available to travel to your home, just contact me at and let’s chat!

Stitt Family, thanks again for the opportunity to photograph you and thanks for welcoming me into your home!

Beauty Shoot at Yards Park, Washington, DC with Natural Light Portrait Photographer

Hi y’all! I try to update my website with new pictures as much as possible. But between kids, the husband, and work, life has been pretty busy. And I don’t always get to book as many shoots as I would like due to limited time. But have no fear!

I had a chance to work recently with Fadeelah Rasheed, a makeup artist based in the Washington, DC area. Fadeelah was in search of a photographer who could help her build her portfolio and I’m glad we were able to connect. She brought her gorgeous model, Bianca, and I brought my creativity and camera! It was a great day for a wonderful shoot. [Read more…]
